Father's Day falls on Sunday, June 16th 2024 in Ireland.
Father's Day celebrates dads, grandads and step-dads all over the world. In almost 100 countries (including Ireland, USA and UK) it is celebrated on the same day each year; the third Sunday in June. It is a celebration honouring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, and the influence fathers have on their children and on society in general. Its history can be traced back as far as the Middle Ages. Today it is used as a way of thanking our fathers for the role they have played in our lives. Although traditional gifts given included the obligatory socks and ties, in more recent years, retailers have catered to the specific hobbies and interests of the fathers.
Father's Day gifts at gifts.ie means personalised gifts - personalised wine, personalised golf balls, personalised pens, personalised chocolates, personalised bathrobes, personalised T-shirts, personalised whiskey and pint glasses, as well as the ever popular - hampers, balloons, fine wines, watches, books, and yes, we even have socks and ties!
Contrary to what many believe, Father's Day wasn't invented by any particular card company to drum up business during a quiet summer! Most countries, including Ireland, the United States and the UK, celebrate Father's Day on the third Sunday of June. There are several theories behind the first Father's Day but generally the first father to receive a pair of socks and a tie was William Jackson Smart. He was a US Civil War veteran and after his wife died in 1898, he raised his six children in Spokane, Washington. His daughter was so moved by his efforts to raise their family, and inspired by the latest holiday of Mother's Day, she started a campaign to have Father's Day officially recognised. Through her efforts, the first Father's day was celebrated on June 19th 1910. It was officially recognised in 1972 under President Nixon. So this Father's Day, instead of going to your local store and picking up something at the last minute, why not plan early and get something a little more unusual online.
The officially recognised date of Father's Day varies from country to country. In Ireland, the US and UK, and many other countries it falls on the third Sunday in June.
